Charting the Legacy of The Harbour at the Pointe: A Mooresville Neighborhood Steeped in Lake Norman History

Nestled on the scenic shores of Lake Norman, The Harbour at the Pointe stands as both a modern residential gem and a tribute to Mooresville’s storied lakeside heritage. While this neighborhood is known today for stately homes, winding streets with water views, and a welcoming, close-knit community, its roots run much deeper—entwined with the evolution of Lake Norman and the growth of the Mooresville area itself. As a longtime resident, I’m excited to share how The Harbour at the Pointe has become a cherished piece of Iredell County’s past, present, and future.

The Origins: From Quiet Countryside to Lakeside Vision

Before Lake Norman existed, the land that would become The Harbour at the Pointe was rolling, wooded countryside—a patchwork of family farms and hardwood forests, with only the gentle curve of Brawley School Road hinting at the changes to come. The story begins in the early 1960s with the creation of Lake Norman by Duke Energy. The flooded valleys transformed sleepy riverside forests into prime waterfront real estate, and, over the next several decades, drew waves of newcomers seeking lakefront living.

By the late 1980s and early 1990s, the area west of Mooresville was beginning to attract developers with grand visions: blending the tranquility of the lake with the amenities of an upscale neighborhood. “The Pointe” itself was a geographical description—a prominent finger of land jutting gracefully into Lake Norman, bordered by serene coves on all sides.

How the Neighborhood Got its Name

The moniker “The Harbour at the Pointe” is more than a poetic flourish—it’s literally descriptive. The “Harbour” speaks to the neighborhood’s deep connection with Lake Norman, where boat slips, docks, and marinas remain the heartbeat of the community. Meanwhile, “The Pointe” refers to the prominent peninsula around which the neighborhood is wrapped, visible from both the water and the winding routes of Harbourview Drive and Yacht Road.

This sense of place—where land meets lake, and where people gather at the edge of the water—has always been central. It’s reflected in street names like Corinthian Lane, Easton Drive, and Cape Fear Lane, which evoke both a nautical and refined spirit.

Key Historical Milestones

The Harbour at the Pointe was officially developed in the early 1990s, quickly distinguishing itself with luxury lake homes, most of which featured private docks, sweeping views, and spacious lots. Early residents recall dirt roads and construction crews, as well as the excitement of watching the community take shape.

Central to the neighborhood is The Harbour Clubhouse at 830 Harbour Place Drive, the social hub for generations of residents. From the start, the neighborhood was designed with recreation in mind—tennis courts, a junior Olympic swimming pool, and walking trails became defining amenities.

As families moved in, ensuring quality education became a priority. Brawley Middle School, just outside the neighborhood on Brawley School Road, opened in 2006 and has long served as an anchor for local children.

Throughout the 2000s, the transformation of Brawley School Road from a winding two-lane route to a modern, widened boulevard was a pivotal change, improving access while maintaining the area’s lush scenery and charm.

Notable Landmarks and Institutions

More than just a gathering place, the Clubhouse represents the neighborhood’s communal spirit. Annual events, community meetings, and family gatherings have forged strong bonds here over the decades.

The neighborhood’s marinas and multiple boat launches—tucked among the winding coves—remain a symbol of what makes life at The Harbour unique. There’s nothing quite like a sunset cruise from your own backyard.

Residents and visitors alike cherish the walking trails and lakeside green spaces scattered throughout the neighborhood. These small oases, including those along Vineyard Drive and Corinthian Lane, are perfect for picnics, dog walks, or simply watching herons glide across the water.

Evolution Over the Decades

Although it began as a sleepy outpost, The Harbour at the Pointe has become synonymous with the best of Lake Norman living—balancing sophistication with genuine warmth and neighborly connection. Over the years, new homes and cul-de-sacs were added, always with an eye to preserving the natural beauty and intimate feel that defines the neighborhood.

Homes here still range from grand estates to modern custom builds, but you’ll also find original owners whose stories reach back to the earliest days. The Homeowners Association retains a strong reputation for involvement, hosting everything from chili cook-offs to boat parades during the holidays.

Perhaps the most striking evolution has been the emergence of a multigenerational community. What started as a destination for retirees and summer visitors has blossomed into a haven for families, professionals, and all who cherish lake life.

A Lasting Heritage

As Mooresville’s Brawley Peninsula continues to grow and change, The Harbour at the Pointe stands as a testament to the power of good planning, natural beauty, and shared values. Ask longtime residents why they stay, and they’ll talk about the laughter echoing across cul-de-sacs, the gentle rhythms of lake life, and above all, a sense of belonging.

The Harbour at the Pointe is more than a collection of elegant homes on the water—it’s a vibrant community rooted in respect for the land, a reverence for the lake, and a deep appreciation for the neighbors who have shaped its story through every season. Whether you’re drawn by history, scenery, or the promise of connection, this neighborhood remains a crown jewel on Lake Norman’s storied shoreline.
